Swamp News / Swamp News Live

The Journalism course is an elective course for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders which teaches students concepts and theories of Journalism and Media.  In this course students learn basic aspects of newspaper journalism and to provide practical experience in news-gathering techniques, journalistic writing, and layout design for publications. The Swamp News and Swamp News Live are enjoyed by the student body each Friday morning.

No textbooks are used.  The instructor uses lecture and demonstration during the first few weeks.  The remainder of the year is used to increase journalistic skills through production of a weekly school newspaper and a weekly or biweekly school news video broadcast. Journalism vocabulary words are taught intermittently to ensure sufficient background knowledge.  Field trips are taken periodically to give journalistic experiences. Students are encouraged to view and use social media outlets to ensure a broad understanding of Journalism and media in today’s world.

Also use examples of current newsprint including The Sun and The Palm Beach Post. Internet media sites are often explored and researched including, but not limited to, MSNBC.com, CNN.com and FoxNews.com. The Swamp News is created using Microsoft Publisher and Swamp News Live is created using a Macbook Pro.
